The Virginia Aquarium was really cool! We got to touch horseshoe crabs, rays and a snake. Perhaps surprisingly, Nellie loved that part a whole bunch. She didn’t want to leave the creatures. The little ones (ok the older ones too!) had a bunch of fun watching the turtles and sea horses and other water lovers… Continue reading Aquarium

Technology
A few words about the technology we brought with us. As the duly appointed Entertainment Director on our voyage, I made sure we were prepared with all the electronic comforts of home. We used a Christmas gift from my aunt to purchase a DVD player — one that plays not only DVDs, but also can… Continue reading Technology
Artillery and Chickens
It seems that there are two things all the places we have been visiting have in common: artillery and chickens. Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, and the historical site we visited today, Yorktown, all have these –apparently– important additions to the sites. Today we watched cannons being fired (no actual bombs were used) by two men at… Continue reading Artillery and Chickens
Tavern hopping with the minors
A couple of days ago I bought my first round of beers at the local tavern for my sisters. (For the protection of those who participated, I will only say that the beer tasted more like an herb garden than a Budweiser factory.) Unlike all the old time movies portray, no brawls, arguments or dancing… Continue reading Tavern hopping with the minors
Who needs history?
For the kids, some of the important stuff has nothing at all to do with history. Like this hill, for instance, at the Tredegar Iron Works. Who cares that it overlooks Belle Isle, where thousands of Union prisoners of war were held? It makes for great tumbling. Just watch Zane in action.
hear ye, hear ye, this courthouse is a marvel
The courthouse at Colonial Williamsburg has a wealth of knowledge in the form of a very informative interpretor. Here are the facts: * When someone takes an apprentice, he agrees to not only teach the child his trade, but to also make sure he/she goes to church, does not frequent taverns, plus learns to read… Continue reading hear ye, hear ye, this courthouse is a marvel
Jamestown
Jamestown was the destination for our group today. We left the hotel at 9:15 this morning, breaking our past record of getting out the door at 9:30! The Jamestown Settlement was one of the funnest places we have been to so far, mostly because of all the hands-on stuff we got to do. There, they… Continue reading Jamestown
Another fun but exhausting day…..
Today we traveled back in time to Colonial Williamsburg, where some of us spent five and a half hours! There was so much to see and do, I almost didn’t know where to start! Fortunately for me, I wasn’t the one deciding what to do. That was all mama, our Trip Coordinator, Snack Provider, Piggy-back… Continue reading Another fun but exhausting day…..

The trip out was pretty easy
Surprisingly easy, now that I stop to think about it. This family is great to travel with, and people notice. Carolyn, the hostess at the local Uno’s Chicago Grill, came up to us and asked, “Are you homeschooled?” When we said yes, she told us that she could tell. She was a schoolteacher for 20… Continue reading The trip out was pretty easy
